Samuel Kaiser is a London-based designer from Uganda and founder of the fashion house Gveny.
He was taught to sew by his mother, a tablecloth maker, who occasionally used an antique Singer treadle sewing machine to mend clothes for a living. Along the way he developed drawing skills, and with a passion to do something that was different from the norm in fashion, he knew he’d have to upskill himself to turn the crazy designs in his head into reality. Despite enduring several life-changing events including emigrating to London, his passion for art and fashion remained.
He started studying Fine Art at Croydon College in 2011 and excelled. However, much to the disappointment of his tutors, he chose to pursue his love of fashion and left Croydon College in 2013 to study Fashion and Design at the University of East London (UEL). He graduated from UEL in 2016 with a Bachelor of Honours in Fashion and Design.
Samuel has participated in Paris Fashion Week (2018), dressed the models for the Black Beauty Sensationnel Hair Awards (2017), worked with the famed hair stylist Errol Douglas MBE, and has been featured in several magazines including Dé Modé, The Journal, Fashion Magazine 24, Féroce and British Vogue.
After accumulating a large collection over the last few years, Samuel’s work was destroyed in a fire at a storage facility in early 2019. He will unleash his creativity at ZFS2019 #ThisIsAfrica for his ‘comeback from the setback.’
